Project
The objective of this multiple year project was to restore the Shea Landscape of Northern Ghana, improve savannah woodland and agroforestry management practices and strengthen tree-based income generation for local communities. It existed of a training component and provision of inputs (trees and technical assistance) for tree planting and tree-on-farm management. The project established a community nursery to produce seedlings of Shea and other native and productive tree species. Under the project 40 communities in Northern Ghana have been trained and provided with planting material and knowledge to restore their landscape and agricultural practices to become climate resilient and productive through agroforestry. The project was presented at the Shea conference ‘Seeds of Change’ organized by the Global Shea Alliance (GSA), in Benin, in March 2017. GSA supported the project financially and by creating partnerships. IUCN – Netherlands committee supported the set-up of a community nursery.
Our roles and partner roles
The project was led and coordinated by Form International with support of Form Ghana. Important project partners were A Rocha Ghana (ARG) and the Presbyterian Agric Services (PAS). For community access and engagement, the project built on partnerships with these two NGOs.

“Wunmi Osholake, Program Director Sustainable Shea Initiative: “The shea parklands are a lifeline to thousands of Ghanaian women, as such it is critical we preserve them. Our collaboration with Form International and its partners under the USAID funded Sustainable Shea Initiative ensures that through training and development of nurseries, communities are empowered to increase shea tree population across Africa.”
